The Chaise

Chaise After 1

I was asked by Dani Collins to create a drawing of one of my lyrics for an art show at a new restaurant in Silverlake.  It is an idea of mine to start a drawing series with all of my lyrics. Here is the first one.

I refurbished this chair for my one of my friends. It was fun making it.  It was the beginning of my furniture refurbishing company that I was starting with my boyfriend, Mitchell Long.

I was contracted by Technical Publications to create illustrations for Western Digital from 2010-2014.

Here are a few examples:

We played a benefit in Seattle for Nicki's Sister who was experiencing some health issues. Sadly she passed away a few months later. It was a sad time for Nicki and I.

This is a band I formed with my dear friend, JEREMY MORELOCK "THE PROFESSOR".  We have been friends for many years and always supported each others music! I bought a saz and needed some lessons! At one of the Dung Mummy Desert Events, we decided to bring our sazes and jam. The track, "First Ever Improv Burns Canyon 04/21/13" is a document of this. We have written 5 songs and released this album in July 2014.

Here is the art work I made for it.

I refurbished this couch for my producer, David Irish of Pot Of Gold Recordings. My favorite is all the stuff I found in the couch!

My last construction project was at the Port of Long Beach. As a Project Engineer, I assisted with constructing the New Maintenance Facility. It was great to be on a large project again building from the ground up.  Sadly, my company removed it's building division and had no project to be transferred to. I had a great run in the Construction Industry for 11 years.

I have yet to complete this music video. But here is the beginning illustration for the Tiger that I will animate for The Swords of Fatima's  "Shadowplay of the Tiger" music video.

At Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, I worked as a consultant through Parsons from January 2009 to December 2011. I was a construction manager assisting with Close-Out for Valadez MS New Construction, and a few other Elementary Schools.  I assisted with completing construction and close-out for Yorba Linda HS New Construction.  I worked on the smart classroom installation program district wide. I also helped on multiple modernization projects for Kraemer MS and Valencia HS.

I worked as a Construction Manager for Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. Here are some drawings I created for the construction bids.  I had to create them in Adobe Acrobat.  There was no budget for me to create them using the correct software. Not bad for primitive methods.

This was the second hospital that I assisted with construction as a construction administrator.  Kaiser Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard.

Here is a link to an article of the first building project I assisted with construction.  I started to work at an architectural firm, SmithGroup JJR in September 2002. You can see it off the 134 FWY next to Disney Animation Studios.

So I enlisted some friends to help me parade my Colonialism Afghan up Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. We were stopped by the police because they thought we were going to protest and riot. We had Police Helicopters instead. This was made for a group from Berlin called A-Clip. They used short clips from various artists and requested them to be played in various theaters around the world in place of the typical trailers you would see before a movie.

Besides the Colonialism Afghan, my other final piece at CalArts was a magazine I created called, "Static". Here is the Editor's Notes and some pieces I created for the magazine. There were other artists that participated and submitted to the magazine. It was sold at the MFA Thesis Exhibit at a gallery in Bergamot Station.

This is one of my final pieces I made at CalArts. I crocheted a 30 foot afghan with "COLONIALISM" spelled out in the pattern. It was displayed backwards and had a mechanism at one end that was unravelling it.

Besides photographs I came home with a ton of video footage from my travels to the Philippines since 1997.  Overwhelmed with all of the beautiful memories visiting my long lost family, I also came across the trails of living in a third world country. I created various video installations with this footage.  Here are a few photos of these installations. One is of a video I created about my grandmother who is also a faith healer. The other is an actual video of me sifting through photographs. It became a video of my paintings.

Video 1

I grew up in Virginia. I moved there when I was 4 years old. It was not very diverse in the rural areas. I did not grow up with many Filipinos. They were all in Virginia Beach.  Here was some research I did with photos I found on the internet in comparison to family photos I had.

Filipino 1

The work became more and more about the fabric. I had completed a lot of self-discovery previously.  I was able to be curious more about what more I could do with painting with fabric.

Fabric 5

Fabric 12

Self-Portrait Series. On paper. No frames.

Self-Portrait 2

I helped create some of the furniture and fabric pieces in this art installation.

Installation 1

The painting became just as important as the photos and the identity research as I started to play with the idea of the frame of the painting.  It became just as much about the fabric as the photos.  The the frame completely disappeared.

Frame 1

Sometimes you just need to paint just to paint.

After I graduated from VCU in 1997, I went home to the Philippines for the first time since I left when I was 4 years old. My current identity crisis with fitting in as an American became more complicated when I did not know where I stood as an American in the Philippines. I saw family photos for the first time and met many of my relatives for the first time. The series of paintings I started soon after where a document of finding myself through these old photos and who that person was and cold have been if I did stayed in the Philippines. Fabric and collage where the only way I could portray such vagueness of memory and the complex restructuring of my identity as a Filipino Immigrant in America.

While studying cars at VCU, I also was studying the body through canopic jars, pitchers, and paper dolls. Words/Text have always been part of my work.  I wanted to give a voice to the subject in the sculpture.

Dress 2

I was interested in gestures and body language.

Birds 1

Here are the teapots transformed from cars to sculptural birds.

Sculpture 1

Sculpture 2

I started as a ceramists back in High School. I received a B.F.A. in Crafts with a focus in Ceramics from VCU in 1997.  I continued my work at Ohio State University. Sadly, I have not touched clay again since then, 1999.  I still long to be on the wheel throwing a vase. There is something to be said about having the earth in your hands and transforming it.

This series is my "custom" teapots that where inspired by cars from the 1970s and older. Later I became more and more inspired by the Sculptor, Brancusi. The forms no longer looked like cars. I became more interested in the form of birds.

Here are a few oil paintings I did for my Papa (step-father). He was German and loved u-boats. He had printed versions of old paintings that I replicated. I also created a painting based on a photo he took of his childhood house in Salzgitter.
